USAID Announces $52 Million in Development Assistance for Programs Inside Venezuela

Today, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green, while standing alongside Venezuelan lawmakers, human-rights activists, and the Venezuelan Ambassador to the United States, Carlos Vecchio, announced $52 million in development assistance to help Venezuela's  Interim President Juan Guaido, his government, and the Venezuelan people as they seek to restore citizen-responsive, democratic governance to their country.

As Deputy Secretary Sullivan just mentioned, the United States is announcing an additional $120 million in humanitarian assistance that will provide urgently needed food and healthcare to vulnerable Venezuelans in Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, and throughout the region. It will also support the local communities who are graciously hosting their neighbors in need.

On September 4, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan and USAID Administrator Mark Green announced more than $120.2 million in additional USAID humanitarian funding for the Venezuela regional crisis response. The assistance, which includes approximately $69.8 million from USAID/FFP and nearly $50.5 million from USAID/OFDA, will enable non-governmental organization (NGO) and UN partners to continue providing critical multi-sector support to vulnerable populations in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

While the illegitimate former Maduro regime continues to deny the scale of the crisis - as well as its role in causing it - independent international organizations report dire, irrefutable findings from inside Venezuela. The Maduro regime's corruption and mismanagement have led to the destruction of Venezuelan social services and crumbling public infrastructure, contributing to the deepening humanitarian crisis. The United States is supporting our Hemispheric partners in addressing the needs of Venezuelans who have fled to the region, and stands ready to provide assistance inside Venezuela.
