Hasan Nurov is from Navzamin village in Khuroson district, Tajikistan. For generations, Hasan’s family, like many farmers in the district, grew cotton. However, over time, water scarcity and low cotton prices created a conundrum for farmers. Should they continue growing an unprofitable crop, or instead migrate to Russia, where there were higher paying jobs?
On September 21, 2020, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) celebrated five years of achievements of the USAID-funded Dignity and Rights program implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Hissar is a city in Western Tajikistan, about 15 km from Dushanbe, the country’s capital. The Hanaka River flows through the city, and the main attraction is the legendary Hissar fortress, through which the caravans of the Great Silk Road passed.
“When there are floods, we have to build barriers to keep our land safe,” says Ataev Maksat, a 35-year old farmer from Saryyazy, a village in Mary, Turkmenistan. He is a third generation farmer, growing wheat and cotton on his ancestral land. He also raises livestock and tends to his household vegetable garden -- all of which relies on the Murghab, a transboundary river that flows from Afghanistan to Turkmenistan.
Starting in 2013, July 30 has been recognized as World Day against Trafficking in Persons. Since then, USAID’s grantee, Istiqbolli Avlod, has been conducting events and activities to raise awareness and prevent trafficking in persons in Uzbekistan.
