As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in North Macedonia now face reduced liquidity, reduced profitability, and reduced turnover of claims. This reduces the capital of the SMEs, which could threaten their survival on the market. Factoring can provide a liquidity lifeline and improve the chances of market survival. Factoring allows businesses to access the capital or money they are owed for completed sales or services but for which they have not yet been paid.
The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has obligated $18 million to support the provision of medical oxygen across 11 affected countries: the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; and the Republics of Bolivia, Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Haïti, Honduras, Kenya, Mozambique, Perú, and Tajikistan. Supplemental oxygen is an essential, life-saving treatment for people ill with COVID-19. The funds announced will purchase and distribute oxygen-generating equipment and related consumables and durables, and finance technical assistance to train health-care workers to use them.
On September 28, USAID/Armenia launched a new activity to support Armenia’s ability to respond to COVID-19 and other potential public health issues. The project, “Support to Control COVID-19 and Other Infectious Disease Outbreaks,” was awarded to the American University of Armenia Fund and will work to strengthen Armenia's national capacity to control COVID-19 and other communicable disease outbreaks and emergencies of potential public health concern. Since 2014, USAID has been partnering with the Government and private sector in Uzbekistan to improve the quality and safety of medicines. One of the successes of this partnership has been ensuring the quality of medicines available to treat diseases of public health importance such as tuberculosis (TB).
Vietnam’s business community has been hit hard by COVID-19. Many businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), are suffering from revenue loss, suspension of operations, and staff cutbacks. They are struggling to regain their former momentum and continue their operations. To address this, the USAID Linkages for Small and Medium Enterprises (LinkSME) project is working closely with the Government of Vietnam and business support organizations such as the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) to facilitate Vietnamese SMEs’ access to finance and business recovery post-COVID-19. On October 30, USAID LinkSME and ITPC held a workshop on “Supporting Enterprises to Gain Access to Finance for Post-COVID-19 Business Recovery.” Almost 300 participants engaged in the workshop, including international financial institutions, commercial banks, business associations, international development organizations, and enterprises from Ho Chi Minh City and nearby provinces. The workshop was followed by a business matching event where over 50 matches were made between SMEs and financial institutions/commercial banks.
