Agricultural development has long been a mainstay of USAID’s programs throughout the developing world. Helping rural populations develop sustainable and productive farming systems generates income and reduces food insecurity. Given the key role agriculture plays in developing economies, and its importance to rural households’ food security, small-scale agricultural development activities targeted at the rural poor are likely to increase. Identifying potential impacts during the planning stages of an agricultural project, or during an environmental assessment, allows for alternative methods to be developed, thereby contributing to sustainable agriculture and increased yields.
