Amman (September 26, 2016) – With support from the United States, the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) and the Jordan Water Company Miyahuna today inaugurated the Amman Water System Improvement Projects, which will save more than 1 million JD in annual energy costs and improve the water supply to about 1 million people living in Amman.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the project site in Dabouq under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Hazim Al-Naser, Minister of Water and Irrigation, and U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Alice G. Wells. The ceremony was attended by Ministry of Water and Irrigation Secretary General, H.E. Engineer Iyad Dhayah; WAJ Secretary General, H.E. Engineer Tawfiq Habashneh; Miyahuna CEO, Engineer Munir Owis; and other distinguished officials.

The $6.7 million project was co-financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) ($5.7 million) and the Government of Jordan ($1.0 million). This second phase of the Amman Water System Improvement Project included the construction of a new pump station at Dabouq, improvements to the existing Al Kharabsheh pump station, and the installation of new valves and six kilometers of new water transmission pipelines.

“Working together, we will continue to strengthen Jordan’s water security and improve Jordan’s sustainable management of its limited water resources,” said Ambassador Wells.

The project fulfills the objectives of the Jordan National Water Master Plan, which promotes efficient water use in order to adapt to an increasing population, decreasing rainfall and changing social needs.

This project continues a history of U.S.-Jordanian cooperation in water resource development that dates back to the country’s founding. The United States government, through USAID, has provided foreign assistance from the American people to Jordan for more than 60 years.
