To consolidate hard-won democratic gains and foster long-term resilience, the United States partners with the Kyrgyz Republic to strengthen democratic governance, accelerate economic growth and improve health and education.

USAID partners with the Kyrgyz Government, civil society and the private sector to sustain and strengthen democratic governance, bolster economic growth, and improve health and education outcomes — all in a strategic effort to forge a prosperous, inclusive and self-reliant Kyrgyz Republic.

DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE

To combat foreign influences that threaten the Kyrgyz Republic’s stability and progress, USAID works with the Kyrgyz Government to advance shared democratic values and promote the rule of law. Owing in part to USAID’s steadfast support of independent media, the Kyrgyz Republic has the highest level of media freedom in Central Asia, according to Reporters Without Borders. USAID also helps strengthen communities at risk of radicalization and recruitment by armed groups, focusing on youth, disadvantaged regions and marginalized populations.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

USAID supports the government’s commitment to accelerate inclusive economic growth. USAID partners with the public and private sectors to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of Kyrgyzstanis by expanding business opportunities, boosting competitiveness and increasing incomes for smallholder farmers — all of which open doors to American trade. For example, in 2017, USAID helped nearly 4,500 farmers double their crop yields, boosting their sales by $3.5 million.

HEALTH AND EDUCATION

The Kyrgyz Republic is home to the world’s highest rate of new drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) cases. To combat the spread of this deadly disease, USAID aims to improve the quality of care delivery, detection, diagnosis and treatment with a focus on high-risk populations. Thanks in part to new TB treatments introduced by USAID in 2017, treatment time has been reduced by half. To build a healthy and strong future workforce, USAID is extending its reading interventions to all 2,250 public primary schools in the country and is improving access to higher education for tomorrow’s leaders.
