Okuu Keremet! (Learning is Awesome!) is a project designed to help improve learning outcomes in reading and math among 300,000 students in grades 1-4 in 1,687 target schools in the Kyrgyz Republic.
MAJOR FOCUS AREAS
In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science (MOES) of the Kyrgyz Republic, Okuu Keremet! will focus on improving the quality of teaching reading and math to early grade learners. The project will also provide students with high-quality supplementary learning materials and work with the government on improving the quality of education for every child.
EXPECTED IMPACT AND RESULTS
- Okuu Keremet! will train more than 18,000 teachers, librarians and other educators on effective methods of teaching reading and math. They will be trained based on basic and advanced training materials developed as part of the program.
- The project will assist the Ministry of Education and Science to develop in-service teacher professional skills through on-the-job training. It will also work to improve preparatory programs for pre-service teachers before they enter the profession.
- 1,687 target schools and 82 public libraries will receive total of almost 900,000 copies of new books. Access to quality reading and math materials inside and outside the school is key to improving education of early graders. All of the reading materials and other learning resources will be developed in students’ mother tongue languages that are appropriate for their diverse backgrounds and ages.
- The project will also work with parents, communities and schools to enhance out-of-school learning. As part of this effort, USAID will help more than 1,000 schools to conduct reading and math summer/winter camps for students.
- All of these activities are expected to accelerate learning of children and ensure that they succeed in reading and math at primary level of education. USAID plans to regularly conduct reading and math assessments to see how effective these approaches are.
- In addition, USAID will also conduct studies and assessments that shed light on the issues of gender equality and social inclusion in primary education.
