In partnership with UNICEF, USAID has built 96 temporary schools to respond to the immediate needs of children who are on-the-move. The Alternative Basic Education (ABE) program is tailored to the specific needs of displaced or pastoralist children, educating approximately 21,000 students through an accelerated curriculum that condenses grades one to eight in five years. Flexible timetables, student books and teachers' guides, and recreational kits are helping children to learn in a safe environment - sometimes for the first time.
