Video Transcript
In Somalia I was pleased to formally re-establish a USAID mission in
Mogadishu. The first USAID mission there in nearly 30 years. The new mission
symbolizes the strengthening ties between Somalia and the U.S. It also
reflects the government of Somalia's commitment to peace, citizen responsive
governance and expansion of economic opportunity. Their upcoming elections are
a historic opportunity to enshrine the principles of democracy and to bring
true representative government into play. Not just for now but for generations to
come. I also saw firsthand the potential of
Somalia's private sector at a trade symposium showcasing USAID supported
small businesses. These inspiring Somalis were excited about the possibilities now
open to them. They are the first generation of women engineers working in
the energy sector in Somalia. USAID is proud to partner with these businessmen and
business women and help them to build their capacity and expand their
businesses. While Somalia's future has much promise it's also true that many
Somalis these days suffer from severe food insecurity as a result of drought
and conflict. While I was in Somalia, I announced 185 million dollars in
humanitarian assistance to provide life-saving food, water and health care
to Somalis in need. America is the largest provider of humanitarian aid to
Somalia, and is proud to stand with the Somali people and their leaders.
"Thank you. This is another step."
