The United States Agency for International Development’s Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CMSU) project supports the implementation of the MNCHN Strategy, the Government of the Philippines’ strategy to achieve its 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce maternal and under-5 mortality.

The project aims to strengthen the skills and practices of public and private sector midwives as providers of family planning and maternal and neonatal health services. It will enhance their capacity to organize, coordinate, train and support the effective functioning of MNCHN service delivery networks (SDN), particularly the community health teams (CHTs), in order to expand families’ access to appropriate health care.

USAID’s CMSU project will strengthen the national and local midwives associations’ capacities in mentoring and monitoring, performance management and monitoring using the quality improvement collaborative approach, and in quality assurance in public and private birthing homes. The project will collaborate with local government units, national government agencies and other health professional associations to secure policy support for sustained quality of midwives services.

The project operates in the following provinces and cities: Pangasinan, Pasig City/Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas including Batangas City, Quezon, Negros Occidental, Iloilo including Iloilo City, Leyte, Davao del Sur, Misamis Oriental including Cagayan de Oro City, Zamboanga del Sur, and Maguindanao.

PROJECT COMPONENTS
Component 1: Mentoring and monitoring of midwives on the correct practice of essential intra-partum and newborn care (EINC), ante-natal care (ANC), family planning (FP) counselling and services, and infant and young child feeding and exclusive breastfeeding (IYCF/EBF) counselling
Component 2: Expanding midwives’ reach through participation at various levels in the service delivery network (SDN) and community health teams (CHTs)
Component 3: Strengthening the national and local midwives associations’ organizational and management capacities

GOAL
To enhance midwives’ clinical skills and organizational management capacity towards expanding delivery of quality family planning and (FP) and maternal, neonatal, child health and nutrition (MNCHN) services

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

• Improve the clinical skills and practices of midwives in crucial FP/MNCHN services
• Expand midwives’ service delivery capacity in order to increase families’ access to FP/MNCHN services
• Strengthen midwives associations’ organizational and management capacities
