Dakar, SenegalㅡToday the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) released its 13th Annual Report for fiscal year (FY) 2018, highlighting progress against malariaㅡincluding in Senegal. In FY 2018, PMI benefited more than 570 million people at risk of malaria worldwide.

PMI has partnered with Senegal to fight malaria since 2007, funding core malaria interventions and providing valuable technical and operational assistance to reinforce and amplify Senegal’s efforts to end this deadly, yet entirely preventable, disease In FY 2018, PMI invested 14 billion cfa Senegal and PMI has provided $159 billion cfa in support to Senegal since it began.

“U.S. government investments in the fight against malaria are a critical driver for development in Senegal. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is committed to reducing the country’s malaria burden so populations may thrive. It is an especially exciting time for PMI in Senegal as several regions move closer to elimination of the disease,” said USAID Senegal Mission Director Lisa Franchett.

With the health ministry and national malaria program in the leadㅡand in close collaboration with local communities, donors, multilateral organizations, faith groups, the private sector, research and academic institutions, and many othersㅡPMI has supported significant improvements in the coverage and impact of proven, cost-effective malaria interventions in Senegal.

“PMI shows what is possible when we work together, empowering countries to lead the way to zero malaria,” said U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator Dr. Kenneth Staley. “Looking forward, we are excited to expand coverage of lifesaving interventions, introduce innovations, and revolutionize our data environment to secure our shared vision for a world without malaria.”
