On behalf of the United States government, congratulations to the Department of Basic Education for the launch of the new National Policy on HIV, STIs and TB. Deputy Minister Surty, this is a significant milestone in the fight against HIV, STIs and TB, and it will benefit South African learners for many years.
Good morning and thank you on behalf of the United States government for the opportunity to join you for this session. As you just heard from Dr. Pillay, South Africa is burdened by one of the most severe TB epidemics in the world, while also dealing with the greatest burden of HIV-infected individuals.
Switching to clean energy takes preparation, but the results can bring jobs and other benefits to communities and reduce harmful air pollution.
USAID joined the Deputy President of South Africa, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa; the National Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi; and the South African National Aids Council (SANAC) as they launched South Africa’s five-year National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs, Friday, March 31. The event was also attended by representatives of the international and donor communities including UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibe, and the Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in South Africa, Ms. Jessye Lapenn.
This program was awarded to PricewaterhouseCoopers to continue providing supply chain systems strengthening support to the government through PEPFAR, with the ultimate goal of expanding health coverage and achieving an AIDS-free generation.
