"It is impossible to live an active life if a person stays at home and doesn’t have the opportunity to be a part of society. The first time I thought about it was when I had to learn how to take care of myself at the age of 12," says Eduard Kluisha, now 25 years old. He has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair but has managed to successfully overcome daily obstacles to achieve his dream of becoming a professional photographer.

The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided $1.7 million to help Belarus respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. This assistance is helping prepare laboratory systems, activate case-finding and event-based surveillance, support technical experts for response and preparedness, and bolster risk communications. Medical and technical experts are helping Belarus to prepare for COVID-19 cases, communicating accurate public health information to the public, and supporting community engagement activities with a particular focus on infection prevention and control, including the provision of medical supplies and ensuring access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene in COVID-19 designated health care facilities, social service centers, and other government facilities.

Pavel Skakun created his own software, StickCRM, to optimize business processes. The idea of designing a unique CRM system came into him after his market analysis  demonstrated there was no such program targeting Belarus clients, especially one that would take into account local business processes and integrate with domestic logistics companies and services.

“I believe that each professional needs to apply the best experience of those who are successful in their respective fields," noted Galina Bedulina, an associate professor of the Department of Economic Sociology at the Belarusian State Economic University in Minsk. "My American colleagues inspired me to create effective educational programs to develop the entrepreneurship skills of students at Belarusian educational institutions.”

Despite signing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2015, Belarus lacks critical services for its estimated 25,000 children living with disabilities. Recognizing the importance of this issue, USAID’s Community Connections program exposes Belarusian professionals to American best practices on providing social services for vulnerable groups, including children and youth with disabilities.
