NEW REPORT: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN GLOBAL HEALTH

AI in Global Health

Recognizing the huge potential of AI in global health, The Rockefeller Foundation and United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Center for Innovation and Impact (CII) have partnered, in close coordination with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to develop AI in Global Health: Defining a Collective Path Forward. This report identifies opportunities for donors, governments, investors, the private sector, and other stakeholders to explore and accelerate the appropriate development and cost-effective use of AI at scale in global health.

As part of Women's History Month, CII published a blog on USAID Medium, 8 Inspiring Women Changing the Landscape in Global Health, in celebration of female innovators supported by our Global Health Grand Challenges. These 8 women push the boundaries to solve the world’s toughest challenges, while paving the way for the next generation of scientists, policy makers, change agents and entrepreneurs. They come from organizations including Bempu Health, Shift Labs, Kisumu Medical and Education Trust, D-Rev, Dalberg Data Insights, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, D-tree International, and the World Mosquito Program.

Zika Grand Challenge project partner, World Mosquito Program, was featured on BBC's People Fixing the World podcast series. This story, called The City Where Children are Learning to Love Mosquitoes, describes the task of introducing mosquitoes with Wolbachia bacteria into the city of Medellin, Colombia in order to prevent the spread of viruses such as Zika and dengue. The Guardian published an article featuring Saving Lives at Birth innovator INMED for their package of 3 SL@B-supported innovations, called the Bilikit, to address jaundice in newborns. The package includes the Jaundice Ruler (for screening), the Bilistick® (for quantitative diagnosis), and the Bili-Hut™ (for phototherapy treatment) to address each touchpoint in jaundice management. The article describes INMED's work in Peru, where they are launching a two-year project with the backing of Peru's Ministry of Health to screen, diagnose, and treat jaundice in 12K newborns.

On April 1st, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and USAID/CII, alongside the Aspen Global Innovators Group, hosted an event at the Aspen Institute for the launch of their new report Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Global Health: Defining a Collective Path Forward. The event featured a panel conversation with public and private sector experts exploring the opportunities and challenges of AI in global health. Watch a video of the launch event. The report was also featured in a Lancet editorial and a VOA article.
