DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE

We work to strengthen civil society organizations so that they might be better advocates for their constituents as well as better partners with the Government of Djibouti in delivering essential services at the community level.

EDUCATION

Since 2010, we have worked with the Ministry of Education to develop a national teacher-training plan as well as train over a thousand primary-school teachers.  We have promoted gender equality in education and partnered with the Government of Djibouti to revise textbooks for promote gender neutrality.  USAID is now focusing on working with the Ministry of Education on improving reading outcomes for grades 1-5.

FOOD SECURITY

Recognizing the important role that Djibouti plays in the transit and distribution of USG-funded food assistance to Djibouti and the East Africa region, we provide a major liaison role with the Ports administration, USAID implementing partners and contractors, to ensure that administrative blockages are minimized.  We also work support the personnel of USAID/Washington, and the two regional Food for Peace offices (Ethiopia and Nairobi) during their monitoring and evaluation visits to Djibouti.

THE GLOBAL FIGHT AIDS, TUBERCULOSIS AND MALARIA

The Global Fund and USAID are the two leading donors in Djibouti in the fight against HIV/AIDS.  USAID currently serves as the representative for Bilateral and Multilateral agencies at the Country Coordinating Mechanism, coordinating health programming with the later as well as with other international donors and the Govenment of Djibouti. In addition, our HIV/AIDS program focuses on (i) expanding quality vocational workforce readiness programs, (ii) developing sustainable productive linkages between public vocational/technical education and training institutions employment providers, and (iii) strengthening job placement, retention and advancement services.

POWER AFRICA

USAID is implementing two projects: the Power Africa Transaction and Reform Program (PATRP), and the East Africa Geothermal Partnership.  Through PATRP, USAID embedded a Transaction Advisor at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources who provided technical assistance for identifying and structuring energy transactions and moving them towards financial closure.  EAGP supports the nascent Djibouti Office for Geothermal Development with capacity building and technical assistance.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Djibouti has a chronic dearth of educated, technically and professionally trained young men and women to compete for and obtain the jobs that are needed to meet the country’s expanding economic development.   To help address this, USAID is implementing a Workforce Development Project that focuses on (i) expanding quality vocational workforce readiness programs, (ii) developing sustainable productive linkages between public vocational/technical education and training institutions employment providers, and (iii) strengthening job placement, retention and advancement services.
