Our Work
USAID leads U.S. government humanitarian assistance efforts in Afghanistan by:
- Supporting targeted responses to meet humanitarian and food assistance needs of conflict and disaster affected populations.
- Building resilience by supporting community-based mechanisms that incorporate disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness.
- Encouraging coherent and coordinated national disaster preparedness and humanitarian response systems.
Recent Highlights
- Emergency Response: USAID provides humanitarian assistance to Afghans affected by natural and man-made disasters by providing them with emergency shelter kits, food and nutrition assistance, hygiene products and awareness, winter clothing and blankets, emergency health and trauma care, and access to clean drinking water.
- In Fiscal Year 2018, the USAID Mission in Afghanistan, USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, and USAID's Office of Food for Peace contributed $21 million, $50 million, and $74 million, respectively, to address the ongoing humanitarian needs of at least 1.3 million Afghans.
Disaster Preparedness and Response
USAID works closely with non-governmental organizations, UN agencies, and Afghanistan’s Ministry of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs and relief actors to monitor, assess, and respond to natural and manmade disasters in Afghanistan. USAID supports community hazards assessments, and emergency response trainings.
Food Security and Nutrition
USAID provides emergency food assistance to Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations, including pregnant and lactating women, malnourished children five years and younger, internally displaced persons and returnees, and other severely food insecure populations.
Health, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
USAID works to improve access to health services for disaster and conflict affected populations and to safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure. USAID supports emergency health services, vaccination campaigns, hygiene and sanitation promotion, provision of emergency hygiene and water kits, and rehabilitation of latrines and wells.
Shelter
USAID assists natural disaster-affected households by providing cash-based assistance for construction materials, disaster risk reduction and structural resilience trainings, and distribution of emergency shelter kits.
Humanitarian Access
With USAID’s support, the UN World Food Programme-operated UN Humanitarian Air Service provides transport for humanitarian personnel, increasing humanitarian access and facilitating delivery of food and other emergency assistance to populations in need.
Humanitarian Coordination and Information Management
USAID activities support the standardization of information collection and dissemination and improve the coordination of humanitarian efforts throughout the country.
