Key Developments

Efforts to limit the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across the Southern Africa region—including in Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—have slowed economic activity and negatively affected livelihoods, restricting access to food and other essential goods and services, according to relief actors.

USAID is also responding to disasters in neighboring Southern Africa countries.

Additionally, USAID responded to the effects of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Please visit our webpage for additional information.

Background

Comoros, an archipelago located between Madagascar and Mozambique in the Indian Ocean, experiences occasional tropical cyclones and related flooding as well as intermittent earthquakes and volcanic activity. In addition to responding to urgent needs, USAID, along with the U.S. Geological Survey, supports the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program to coordinate with the Karthala Volcano Observatory, which monitors earthquake and volcanic activity.
