The United States continues to demonstrate global leadership in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, —building on decades of leadership in life-saving health and humanitarian assistance.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the U.S. Government has made more than $1.6 billion available to governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in more than 120 countries to fight the pandemic.

In India, USAID is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic with decisive action. Our priorities in the COVID-19 response are to protect the safety and health security of Indians and support India in its response to COVID-19. We are working directly with a wide range of stakeholders, including government and multilateral organizations, NGOs, the private sector and other organizations responding on the ground to combat this dangerous pandemic. This includes working with frontline workers to slow the spread, care for the affected, and support local communities with the tools needed to fight COVID-19.

To date, USAID has announced nearly $13.1 million in funding to combat COVID-19 in India, aimed at disseminating essential public health messages to communities, strengthening case finding and surveillance, training Community Health Officers, and establishing a financing facility that can mobilize resources from the private sector.

USAID has also donated 200 brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators to India to assist its fight against COVID-19. In addition, USAID is funding a comprehensive package of additional support, which includes accompanying equipment and medical supplies, technical assistance, and service plans. 

Recognizing the secondary impacts of COVID-19 on other sectors, USAID/India is also integrating COVID response measures in its other development programs in areas such as water, sanitation, and hygiene, regional power trade, sustainable landscapes, and other infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis to mitigate COVID’s impact on the poor and vulnerable.

USAID encourages cash donations because they allow aid professionals to procure the exact items needed; can be transferred quickly and without transportation costs; support the economy of the disaster-stricken region; and ensure culturally, dietarily, and environmentally appropriate assistance.
