OVERVIEW

CGCS invests in labor-intensive urban clean-up, repair, beautification, and basic solid-waste management activities. CGCS improves the well-being of citizens and urban environmental quality, increases trust between citizens and municipalities, and strengthens government legitimacy. It also provides an economic stimulus to some of the poorest households in partner municipalities.

ACTIVITIES

  • Urban upgrading and environmental improvement of high-profile public spaces in five major cities such as Kabul, Mazar, Herat, Kandahar, and Jalalabad.
  • Labor-intensive neighborhood renewal in four secondary cities such as Bamyan, Farah, Mehterlam (Laghman), and Charikar.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Established 157 Community Development Councils in 10 partner municipalities.
  • Designed 87 sub-projects and implemented 10 of them.
  • Established 58 Nahia Development Committees in 10 partner municipalities.
  • Collected 101,117 cubic meters of solid waste.
  • Planted trees to create 154,849 square meters of “green” space.
