The USAID Civic Engagement Project strengthens dialogue between citizens and the government on important social issues. The project strengthens constructive engagement by civil society organizations (CSOs) on policies and issues targeted at anti-corruption, transparency, and rule of law, and increases and sustains youth engagement in public life in North Macedonia.
USAID helped establish CEED Macedonia in 2007. Current projects are based on approaches already implemented successfully with small and medium enterprises over the past ten years. Since the beginning of the project, close to 434 entrepreneurs have participated in the learning program and over 354 new jobs have been created in the microenterprises they run, of which 140 have introduced new practices. As result of the various networking opportunities, participants have established over 170 new business deals.
Inaugurated in April 2017, the Youth Ethnic Integration (YEI) project is a five-year USAID activity in partnership with U.S. European Command (EUCOM), implemented by the Macedonian Civic Education Center, to improve inter-ethnic integration and strengthen civic culture among youth in North Macedonia. The project collaborates with the Ministry of Education and Science (MOES), Bureau for Development of Education, Vocational Education and Training Center, State Education Inspectorate, all 450 primary and secondary schools and all 84 municipalities. Together, they enable positive interactions among ethnically diverse youth at the school and community level. The project is supporting the revision of the civic education curriculum, to improve civic skills, behaviors, and volunteerism among the country’s youth.
Today, November 24, 2017 at Hotel Alexander Palace, Skopje, USAID officially launched its Youth Ethnic Integration Project. The project will be implemented by the Macedonian Civic Education Center, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, other Macedonian educational institutions, and U.S. European Command. In attendance were U.S. Ambassador to Macedonia Jess Baily, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, and Minister of Education and Science Renata Deskoska, all of whom emphasized the importance of empowering young people to become active participants in their communities, and building strong relationships with their peers from different backgrounds.
This eight-year project is implemented in cooperation with the International Republican Institute (IRI), the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) to promote political competition and accountability in North Macedonia.
