The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) program, has awarded grants worth nearly Php42 million ($890,000) to five organizations in support of local solutions that address ocean plastics pollution.

A staggering 2.7 million tons of plastic are generated in the Philippines each year, 20 percent of which is estimated to end up in the ocean, according to a 2015 McKinsey and Company study. Through these grants, USAID will partner with local and international organizations to test new models to increase recycling rates, reduce landfill waste and leakage into nearby waters, and improve community livelihoods to help build sustainable waste systems.

“The United States is a committed ally and partner of the Filipino people in protecting the country's rich marine ecosystems and resources for the benefit of present and future generations,” said U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires John Law.

The first wave of grants will pilot solutions to stop the flow of plastic pollution to the waters within and surrounding the Philippines. Program grantees are:

USAID Mission Director’s Visit Reinforces U.S. Government Commitment to Conservation and Development in Palawan

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Lawrence Hardy II visited Palawan this week to engage with development partners and reinforce the U.S. government’s commitment to the province’s sustainable growth. To celebrate World Wildlife Day, Hardy kicked off his trip with a visit to the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, where he initiated the release of rescued animals, including a critically endangered forest turtle.

Mayon volcanic eruption. This follows the Albay provincial government’s declaration of a state of calamity.

The U.S. government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has allocated an additional Php330 million ($6.6 million) to support vulnerable populations affected by the conflict in Marawi City and surrounding areas. This assistance will provide opportunities for young women and men to enhance job skills and attain livelihoods, helping stimulate the economy. These new funds will also help vulnerable populations strengthen positive engagement within their communities. This brings the total USAID contribution to recovery and rehabilitation of Marawi and surrounding areas to over Php1 billion ($20.9 million).

U.S. Government-Backed Organization Opens New Shelter for Trafficking Survivors

The Fellowship for Organizing Endeavors (FORGE), Inc., with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), on November 29, 2017 opened a new shelter in Cebu City for boys rescued from commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. The 24-hour residential care facility will provide food and shelter, educational assistance, counseling services, and medical and dental treatment for teenage boys, ages 12 to 17 years old.

The U.S. Embassy in the Philippines’ United States Agency for International Development (USAID) partnered with YesPinoy Foundation chairman, actor, and youth advocate Dingdong Dantes to kick off the Department of Education’s National Reading Month.

USAID Deputy Chief of the Office of Program Resources Management Chris Foley led the launch with a handover ceremony of storybooks to Highway Hills Integrated School in Mandaluyong City, and Mr. Dantes read a story to Grade 2 students.
