Armenia has made substantial progress in improving the physical health and social well-being of its citizens. However, challenges remain in the areas of maternal and child health, reproductive health, and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. 

USAID engaged in a strategic partnership with the Government of Armenia, civil society, and other stakeholders to address weaknesses and gaps in the health system that negatively impact maternal and child mortality and the burden of TB in the country. USAID targeted both access to and quality of care. 

Over the course of its current strategy, USAID gradually phased out its assistance to the health sector while preserving the legacies and improved outcomes of USAID’s twenty years of assistance.  USAID worked to further partnerships with the government and non-governmental organizations to enhance sustainable approaches and increase host-country ownership.  Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, USAID had ceased implementation of health sector programs. However, with the ongoing pandemic taking a toll on Armenia's health systems, USAID is supporting the Government with immediate emergency health response to combat the virus.  

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

Preparedness and Response to Combat the COVID-19 Pandemic

Partner: International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) | Active: April 2020- December 2020

Works to reduce the morbidity, mortality and social impacts of COVID-19 in Armenia, and prevent, slow or interrupt virus transmission throughout the country and beyond.  The activity delivers essential food and hygiene supplies to vulnerable people, provides psychological support, and disseminates COVID-19 related information through printed materials, social media, and phone.

Preparedness and Response to Combat the Global Novel Coronavirus Outbreak

Partner: World Health Organization (WHO) |  Active: April 2020- November 2020

Works to stop further transmission of the virus and reduce its impact by providing essential equipment, supplies, training and technical assistance to strengthen Armenia’s laboratory capacity to manage large-scale testing for COVID-19.  The activity also supports improved clinical care of those infected with COVID-19, including the most severe cases.

Preventing and Responding to the COVID-19 in At-Risk Countries

Partner: United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) |  Active: March 2020- June 2021

Works to reduce human-to-human transmission of COVID-19 and improve the quality and effectiveness of COVID-19 diagnosis.  The activity is mitigating the impact of the outbreak through risk communication and community engagement, providing critical supplies, improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, and data collection and analysis efforts.

COMPLETED ACTIVITIES 

Improving the Quality of Neonatal Care Services in Armenia

Partner:  Armenian Association of Neonatal Medicine  |  Active:  October 2015-May 2019

The project improved the quality of neonatal care services by enhancing the performance of health care facilities, promoting proper home-based neonatal care behaviors, and strengthening the role of Professional Medical Associations in advancing maternal and child health care. 

Extensive Review of National Tuberculosis (TB) Program of Armenia

Partner:  World Health Organization  | Active:  August 2018-August 2019

USAID supported an extensive review of the National Tuberculosis Program of Armenia to assess its performance in light of goals, objectives, and milestones laid out in the national strategic plan to control TB.

Institutionalization of Patient–Centered Tuberculosis (TB) Treatment in Armenia

Partner:  American University of Armenia Foundation   |  Active:  November 2018-August 2019 

The project worked to institutionalize a patient-centered model of TB care in Armenia to support patients’ progress through the care pathway, prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and support services.
