From June 15 -October 15, USAID’s “My Armenia” project, implemented in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, and in collaboration with Solimar International, launched a four-month virtual technical assistance program for Destination Management Organization (DMO) development. 55 private sector and local community representatives from My Armenia’s five target regions followed a series of online lessons aimed at increasing knowledge on establishing, managing and building DMO capacity.
In Armenia, the fish-farming industry is one of Ararat Valley’s largest consumers of groundwater resources, accounting for approximately 50% of water use. To stop the loss of valuable water, USAID’s ASPIRED Project collaborated with the Aquaculture Technologies Transfer Center (ATTC) and key government and fish-farming sector representatives to develop a testing site at the Armavir Farmer LLC fish farm. With travel much reduced these days, USAID/Armenia and Smithsonian Institution’s My Armenia project has moved its familiarization tours to the virtual world. On December 9, tourism enterprises, artisans and regional entrepreneurs from Armenia’s regions presented their products and services to more than 60 tour operators via an online “tour.” Nearly 20 tour operators have indicated they intend to include at least one of the experiences showcased on the “tour” in their offerings.
USAID’s Rural Economic Development - New Economic Opportunities (RED-NEO) activity, implemented by local partner, CARD, established a partnership with IFAD to train more than 500 farmers on the establishment and care of orchards, building and operation of non-heated tunnel greenhouses, organization of dried fruit production, and beekeeping. Approximately 40 trainings will take place over the next 3-4 months in 16 locations throughout Armenia.
On December 11-12, the USAID-supported Ministry of Justice Center for Development of Legislation and Legal Studies (Center), brought together a large group of stakeholders to discuss several laws and regulations related to the business enabling environment, in line with the Ministry of Justice’s Judicial Reform Strategy Action Plan. Representatives from the National Assembly, the Ministries of Economy and High-Tech Industry, Central Bank, civil society and private sector shared their stances on proposed changes, including to the Law on Joint Stock Companies and the Civil Code.
