USAID partners with Egypt’s national Holding Company for Water and Wastewater and its subsidiaries to improve access to water and sanitation in underserved communities of rural Upper Egypt by providing access to safe water, constructing wastewater facilities for basic sanitation, supporting water and sanitation policy and governance, and institutional strengthening and capacity building. Better water and wastewater services and facilities contribute to improvements in health, tourism, trade, and investment, while also creating thousands of job opportunities for day laborers to construct facilities.

GOALS 

• Construct wastewater collection systems and a water treatment plant
• Expand the Luxor Wastewater Treatment Stabilization Ponds 
• Procure potable water trucks and wastewater vacuum trucks

RESULTS 

• Completed and operationalized a water treatment plant and a wastewater collection system in Assiut that serve 58,000 people in rural areas
• Completed a wastewater collection system in Sohag that serves 23,000 people in rural areas
• Delivered 20 potable water trucks and wastewater vacuum trucks to Assiut, New Valley, and South Sinai that serve over 158,000 people
• Furnished and equipped Assiut Water and Wastewater Company’s Training Center that serves 6,545 employees
• Completed construction of wastewater stabilization ponds in Luxor serving about 250,000 people
