Global Climate Change

Mali’s population of nearly 15 million people has long been accustomed to environmental uncertainty. For the majority of the population living by subsistence agriculture, resilience to climate change is an integral part of people’s livelihood strategies. Sound management of the environment is essential to reduce the risks associated with climate change and climatic events. This is accomplished through appropriate adaptation actions and technologies, particularly in poor areas where agricultural production is difficult. The Global Climate Change Initiative in Mali addresses pressing climate adaptation issues through the extension of small irrigation infrastructure (rice), improved natural resource management practices, and improved agronomic practices in millet/sorghum production throughout Feed the Future intervention areas.
