U.S. food aid helps Malian families withstand crises and conflict

Following peaceful democratic elections and the inauguration of President Keita [KAY-tah] on September 4, 2013 the USAID mission in Mali began working with the Government of Mali to resume foreign assistance more broadly, including education and governance activities that had been suspended since the coup, while also adapting continued activities to the newly-elected Government of Mali priorities as necessary.  

Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance

USAID programs seek to empower Malians to play an important role at the local level of their decentralized government system. The approach consists of developing partnerships with a range of actors—the state, local elected authorities, civil society and the private sector—to find solutions to local development issues. 

Agriculture and Food Security

USAID focuses on reducing poverty through an integrated set of interventions that will increase food security, agricultural productivity, assets, employment and incomes. 

Feed the Future  launches a new generation of rural entrepreneurs by developing sustainable agricultural and health systems, delivering technology and knowledge, and building local institutional capacity to spur a vibrant private sector-led approach to achieve economic and food security. Feed the Future invests in three value chains: millet and sorghum for food security and poverty reduction; rice for growth in household incomes and food security; and livestock for growth in household incomes and nutrition. Under the program, an estimated 500,000 people will be directly impacted while 1.26 million people, including 600,000 mothers and children under age 5 will be indirectly impacted in 143 communes, resulting in a 30 percent reduction of under-nutrition in the target areas

Under the Global Climate Change Initiative, we address pressing climate adaptation issues interventions identified in science and analysis for decision-making and implementation of climate change solutions.

Education

Our programs improve the quality of instruction in primary and upper-primary schools and promote out-of-school youth employment. 

Global Health

Since 2003, USAID has implemented a high-impact health services program that provides an integrated package of services to decrease child and maternal morbidity and mortality. Through the President's Malaria Initiative, we offer services that reduce the spread of malaria in children and pregnant mothers, including insecticide treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, preventative malarial treatment and medication for any child with symptoms.

Through the Global Health Initiative, USAID focuses on strengthening strategic planning for the development of the Health Sector Development Program and providing leadership within the partnership of donors and government; expanding access to post-partum family planning; and on delivering integrated packages of essential services at the community level to work toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals.
