Uzbekistan accounts for over 45 percent of Central Asia’s total population, making it central to the region’s development. Agricultural development, increased trade and private sector competitiveness assist in creating jobs that encourage citizens of Uzbekistan to seek employment in the country rather than migrate  abroad for work, reducing the risk of human trafficking. Preventing the spread of tuberculosis is a top priority as nearly one in seven tuberculosis cases is multidrug-resistant. USAID works to address all these areas, in addition to improving governance, supporting justice sector reforms, strengthening civil society, improving learning outcomes and expanding and improving English language instruction.

Economic Growth and Agriculture

Cotton and wheat have been the country’s primary crops for generations. To diversify the agriculture sector toward higher-value commodities, USAID partners with the government and the private sector on horticulture, viniculture, agro-processing, packaging and quality certification. USAID also facilitates trade, helping traders to find new markets for their products. 

Democracy and Governance

USAID supports the Government of Uzbekistan to reform its judicial sector and improve civil society ties by helping civil society engage the government on human trafficking, labor migration and judicial reforms. An e-court system piloted by USAID in eight civil courts which allows for quick case filing, significantly reducing the time required to publish court decisions has expanded to all 89 districts in the country.

Health

While Uzbekistan is making steady progress in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), it remains one of the most pressing public health threats, especially drug-resistant TB. To help the country more effectively combat tuberculosis, USAID has introduced new anti-tuberculosis medicines, shorter treatment regimens and new diagnostic tools .With USAID’s support, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is building its management capacity and introducing new policies and standards for more effective and accessible TB diagnosis and treatment.
