The USAID Legal Reform Program has assisted the Ministry of Justice in preparing successful models of an investment agreement and bilateral investment treaties. The new investment agreement has made Uzbekistan more attractive to foreign businesses, while also improving protections for Uzbekistan’s interests in the event of a dispute. The new bilateral investment treaties equally contribute to creating a positive investment climate for foreign businesses, as it incorporates international experience and best practices and protects the interests of both parties.
In response to COVID-19, the United States through USAID and in partnership with the Ministry of Public Education is working with the Sesame Workshop, the makers of Sesame Street, to distribute important health and safety public service announcements in Uzbekistan. Sesame Workshop’s COVID-19 media content package, “Caring For Each Other,” was specifically developed to address the challenges faced by young children and their families during the pandemic. The Caring for Each Other Initiative addresses a wide range of topics – from illness prevention with hand washing and other healthy behaviors, to social-emotional themes, including coping with illness, stress, and this “new normal.”
The Government of Uzbekistan Ministry of Public Education is committed to an ambitious program of systematic and comprehensive reforms. Uzbekistan is working to create an education system that can produce graduates with the critical thinking, problem solving, and practical skills that will enable them to succeed. The reform agenda is intended to transform the instructional practices of the teaching workforce, moving away from a focus on rote and fact learning toward enhancing students’ ability to apply knowledge.
Aziza Artikova is a lawyer in Khorezm region’s Urgench city in western Uzbekistan. Most of her caseload focuses on alimony, inheritance and other matters related to domestic law. While her city’s streets are now unusually empty, there are just as many, if not more people, in need of her legal assistance.
On June 5, the U.S. Embassy handed over essential reagents for COVID-19 testing to the Uzbekistan’s Agency of Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing (ASEW) as part of the United States’ assistance to Uzbekistan to combat COVID-19.
